5 Things to Look for in a Wedding Videographer
What’s your vision for your big day? How about your budget? Will your videographer get along with your photographer? Here are the 5 things you should consider when you’re out there shopping for something you’ve probably never shopped for before: your wedding videographer!
Choosing the right videographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your wedding day. After all, long after the cake is eaten and the flowers have wilted, your wedding video will be one of the few things that brings the entire day back to life. But not all videographers are created equal—and with so many options out there, how do you know who’s right for you?
Here are five key things to look for in a wedding videographer to help guide your decision:
1. Style: Do You Love Their Work?
Before you dive into prices and packages, start with the most important question: Do you actually like their style? Videographers have different creative approaches—some are cinematic, others are documentary-style, and some mix both. Watch multiple films in their portfolio. Do you feel something? Does their editing, pacing, and storytelling match the vibe you want for your own wedding video? If not, keep looking.
2. Budget: What Are You Really Paying For?
Price is a factor—but it’s not the only one. Compare the videographer’s pricing to others in your area. If they’re much cheaper, ask yourself: Are they new and building their portfolio? Is it a big company that outsources to random shooters? Low prices can sometimes mean cutting corners and receiving a not so great outcome in your final video . On the flip side, if someone charges a premium, make sure you understand what you’re getting in return. Experience, storytelling skills, premium equipment, size of their team, and polished edits can all a factor and are often worth the extra investment if you care deeply about the quality of your final product.
3. Vendor Referrals: Do They Work Well With Others?
Weddings are a team effort. Your videographer will need to work closely with your photographer, coordinator, DJ, and more. Ask your other vendors if they’ve worked with your videographer before—and how it went! A great videographer respects the flow of the day, communicates well with others, and enhances the experience for everyone involved rather than adding stress.
4. Knowledge: Do They Have the Right Answers?
During your consultation, ask detailed questions:
What’s your turnaround time?
Do you license your music legally?
How do you work around photographers or during the ceremony?
What’s your backup plan for equipment failure?
Are you insured and are therefore allowed to shoot at my venue?
A seasoned videographer should have confident, clear answers that is usually only earned through experience. If they seem vague or dodge questions, that’s a red flag.
5. Reputation: What has been other couples experience?
Online reviews aren’t just fluff—they’re real insights from people who’ve been in your shoes. Look beyond the star rating. Did the videographer deliver on time? Communicate clearly? Handle changes or hiccups well? A solid reputation means they’ve consistently made couples happy, and that’s a great sign for your own experience.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, your wedding video should feel like you. It should reflect the emotion, energy, and joy of your day—and that only happens when you hire someone who truly gets your vision. So trust your gut, do your research, and don’t settle.
Happy planning!
